Scott H Melching AIA LEED GRP

Scott Melching founded Scott Melching Architects, LLC (SMA) in 2013, focusing on the design of retail, residential and urban mixed-use projects.  The firm has completed projects across the country, from Honolulu to New York City and from Miami Beach to New England.  With a focus on client goals and objectives, the firm works side by side with building owners and project managers to develop a cohesive vision at the onset of the project and carry it forward through completion. Notable projects include the retail roll out of National Geographic Art Galleries in major cities across the US, the design of a 210 unit multifamily building in Henderson Nevada outside of Las Vegas, and various residential projects in New York and New England.  SMA has an affinity for existing buildings and believe reviving existing structures is critical as the design and construction industry strives toward greater sustainability.

Prior to focusing on SMA full time, Scott worked for two premiere architectural firms, FXFOWLE Architects in New York City and William Rawn Associates in Boston. In his eleven year tenor at FXFOWLE, Scott led significant urban development and institutional projects in the US and abroad. He led the design and repositioning of 315 Hudson Street in New York City, an eleven story office building with 40,000 square foot floors.  One of his final projects with FXFOWLE was the completion of 888 Boylston Street in Boston, a sustainable mixed-use office building occupying the last development parcel at the Prudential Center. The project included a new entry into the Prudential mall, fifteen story office building, three levels of retail, two levels of below grade parking, new entry for Eataly, and an accessible roof terrace. Institutional projects included an eighteen building educational campus in Nairobi, Kenya, a lower school for Bilkent University in Erzurum, Turkey, and new intermediate and upper school for the NY School Construction Authority in Queens, NY.

Scott is a Green Roof Professional (GRP) accredited by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC). Green or planted roofs address climate change challenges by reducing a project’s heat island effect and storm water run-off. SMA not only includes green roofs in its new construction designs but also works with building owners to access viability for existing roofs, including identifying state and local government subsidies. At FXFOWLE some of Scott’s green roof projects included Symphony House (roof deck and entry canopy), One Lincoln Square and 250 Hudson (which received a design excellence award from GRHC).

Scott received his Bachelor of Architecture from Miami University, where he has been a guest professor in the Graduate School of Architecture. He received his Master of Architecture from Pratt Institute, graduating with honors in academic achievement. Scott is registered to practice architecture in Massachusetts, New York, Nevada, and Ohio.
